Compare Scenarios

Compare different activity levels or body conditions for the same dog.

How It Works

Calculation Principle

This calculator uses the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula: RER = 70 × (weight in kg)^0.75. This is the same formula board-certified veterinary nutritionists use in clinical practice. We then multiply RER by an activity factor based on your dog's age, spay/neuter status, body condition, and exercise level. The result is your dog's Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER) — the calories they need per day to maintain their current weight.

How to Use

Enter your dog's weight in kg or lbs. Select their age category, activity level, spay/neuter status, and body condition. If you know your dog food's calorie density (kcal per cup), enter that too. Click Calculate to see RER, MER, and recommended daily portion in cups. Save results to track changes over time.

Practical Tips

Weigh your dog monthly and recalculate. Adjust portions by 10% at a time — sudden drops mess with metabolism. If your dog is overweight, use the 'overweight' or 'obese' body condition setting, which automatically reduces calories by 15-30%. Always consult your vet before major diet changes.
